BMW E36 wheel fitment guide

Good E36 fitment is more than wheel diameter. Offset, width, tire size, ride height, camber, fender condition and brake clearance all decide whether it works.

Compare your current wheel against the one you are eyeing up. The diagram shows inner clearance, outer poke and tyre diameter changes so the forum reply can start with numbers, not guesswork.

79mm out · 149mm in · 11mm before the fender lip

  • Sits 30mm further toward the arch than your current wheels.
  • Sits 8.1mm closer to the strut than your current wheels.
  • Rolling diameter changes -3.8%, outside the 3% the speedo and ABS expect.
  • Tyre is stretched on this rim (about 1.3in wider than its measuring rim), which pulls the sidewall in off the lip.

Before you buy

  • Pick a profile that brings rolling diameter back within 3%.

For non-stock wheels, measure inner clearance, outer arch and full-lock steering.
Owner setups need car details, ride height and arch notes before they are useful.

Owner verdict

Since it was shocks, there was alot of travel and it could rub when I was forcing with body weight while cornering.

Owner notes

Had to add camber to clear rubbing on the rear but if I went more agressive rolling the fenders then it would clear just fine, or with 205/40 tires...

Fitment depends on the full setup

A wheel that fits one coupe may rub on another car with different tires, suspension, arches or alignment. Always compare the whole setup.

  • Wheel width and offset
  • Tire width and sidewall
  • Ride height, camber and fender clearance

Check rubbing before blaming the wheel

Rubbing can come from tire size, liner position, fender lips, tired suspension or aggressive ride height. Test at full lock and under compression.

  • Full-lock steering check
  • Rear arch and bumper tab clearance
  • Suspension travel under load

Buying used wheels

Ask for specs, photos, cracks, bends, repairs, tire date codes and whether the wheels were actually used on an E36.

  • Confirm PCD, center bore and offset
  • Ask for barrel and lip photos
  • Check tire age, not just tread

FAQ

What wheel specs fit a BMW E36?

There is no single answer. Width, offset, tire size, suspension and body condition all matter. Use owner examples as clues, not guarantees.

Why do my E36 wheels rub?

Common causes include low offset, wide tires, low ride height, fender lips, worn suspension or alignment settings.

What should I ask before buying used E36 wheels?

Ask for exact specs, photos of all wheels, damage history, tire age, center bore, PCD and whether spacers or hub rings are needed.
